Minister States Ministry of Defence Examining Potential Threat from Vehicles from China, as Staff Told to Avoid Confidential Discussions in Cars.

A defense official has revealed that the MoD is actively examining the potential security risks posed by Chinese vehicles, and staff have been advised to avoid discussing classified matters in any cars.

Security Guidance for Defence Staff

During a recently aired interview on LBC, a defence minister commented on reports that Ministry of Defence staff have been instructed not to discuss classified material while travelling in Chinese cars.

He explained that the MoD is “looking into” cars from China within its fleets, however emphasised that safety is a issue in every modern vehicles.

We have a collection of tens of thousands of cars in the MoD and those vehicles account for a tiny fraction.
However regardless of if you’re traveling in a vehicle from China or a car from another country, what we’ve asked our people is to avoid connecting Ministry of Defence technology into their car, not to have conversations at a classified classification in any kind of vehicle, because of the growing threats of eavesdropping that are present in all automobile, to restrict those confidential talks in secure locations. That’s a wise and sensible thing for anyone worried about security.

When it was suggested that it would be prudent for the MoD to stop using all cars from China, the minister replied: That is exactly what we are looking into at the moment.”

Wider Defence Background

The revelation comes as reports from Scandinavian countries have alerted the United Kingdom to the presence of dual-use shutdown mechanisms in Chinese-made buses, which could allow China to disable buses and bring chaos to public transit.

Furthermore, a Russia intelligence vessel has been directing lasers at Royal Air Force pilots, described as a “extremely risky” act by defence officials.

The broader security situation highlights the significance of robust protocols and caution in all areas of official operations, including vehicle usage to discussions practices.
