A comeback Daniil Medvedev won his first trophy for nearly 30 months with a win over Corentin Moutet in the Almaty Open championship match.

The Russian, a former world number one, has had a difficult year, winning just one win at the big events and experiencing a setback at the US Open.

The player's varied form on the ATP Tour - and struggles with his serving in especial - resulted in him dropping out of the world's top 10 and finally parting ways with long-time coach Cervara.

Now training with Johansson and Rohan Goetzke, Medvedev has steadily progressed in the recent weeks - peaking in a closely contested three-set victory over opponent Moutet.

It is the player's maiden title after the 2023 Rome Masters and first on a hardcourt since March of that year.

Success also means he has secured twenty-one titles at 21 distinct competitions.

"For the first time I have attended a competition with my two daughters at once, so to secure a championship is especially meaningful," commented world number 14 Medvedev.

"This victory is in dedication of my child her name, because the initial championship I won when my older daughter her name was born was for her."

The tennis star, the former major winner, had been defeated in his previous six championship matches, comprising in that event previously this season.

The player's counter-punching play style and frequent reactions on the playing surface had caused some to question if his ability to play at the top level was concluded.

Yet the player has made changes in the past month, striving to advance forward and compete aggressively, supported by an better service.

Medvedev came back from a disadvantage in the initial set against the difficult opponent, securing 4 of the final five exchanges to go ahead.

The pair swapped service breaks in the following set before the Frenchman, bidding for his initial ATP Tour victory, gained dominance to create a decider.

The opponent saved 4 initial opportunities in a tight third set before Medvedev broke to 15 to serve for the match.

Suitably, the winner secured victory with a shot at the net, with his opponent unable to manage a volley after two hours and 38 minutes.
